Each panel of the 3 part design focuses on a specific artistic medium connected to FringeArts. The masks seen in the designs reference the theater, their eye holes creating a spotlight effect that illuminates the figures practicing their art below. Based on literary and cultural associations, the animals of the masks symbolize characteristics of the art form depicted.
Panel 1 centers on acting. The barn owl symbolizes storytelling as the heart of this medium. The scene shown hints at an open ended narrative for the viewer to expand upon. Panel 2 portrays the craft of writing. Across many different cultures elephants symbolize wisdom and reflection. Writing is a process of reflection, and often a tool for spreading wisdom found in contemplation. The common saying “an elephant never forgets” is fitting in representing this art form, as so many written works continue to prove their timeless relevance to modern culture. Panel 3 illustrates dance and performance art. Tigers symbolize bravery and agility. The mask reflects both the mental and physical strength that is challenged and honed through performing arts.
The three panels, although depicting separate scenes, coalesce into a cohesive work. The analogous colors and the ribbons flowing from the masks into the next panel unifies the design. The piece emulates the way in which elements of different creative practices overlap and integrate into each other throughout art making and collaboration.
